oligarchija statusas T sritis Politika apibrėžtis Valdymo forma, kai valdžia priklauso nedidelei, dažniausiai turtingųjų, grupei. Dažniausiai remiasi socialine ekonomine galia ir įtaka. Tikslas – didinti organizuoto elito gerovę. Aristotelis priešino oligarchiją aristokratijai – keleto geriausiųjų, besirūpinančių visuomenės interesais, valdymui, ir oligarchiją vertino kaip aristokratijos išsigimimo formą. Paprastai remiasi elitinių šeimų grupuote; jos nebūtinai valdo tiesiogiai, tačiau daro užkulisinę įtaką, gauna privilegijų ir kaupia turtus ar kitais pavidalais reiškiamą galią bei įtaką. Dažniausiai susiformuoja nekontroliuojamai kaupiantis ekonominei galiai. Daugelis monarchijų Viduramžiais išsirutuliojo iš oligarchinių sistemų; galimas ir atvirkščias procesas, kai vienvaldis monarchas priverstas dalytis galia su grupele įtakingų didikų (pvz., Magna Carta pasirašymas 1215). Šiuolaikiniame politikos moksle sąvoka įsitvirtino vokiečių sociologui R. Michelsui 1920 suformulavus „geležinio oligarchijos dėsnio“ idėją. Jis teigė, kad kiekviena organizacija, nepaisant jos demokratinių vertybių, neišvengiamai tampa valdoma grupės žmonių. Įsigalėjimą lemia organizacinė logika, kai administracinių veiksmų ir sprendimų priėmimo poreikis didelis, sudėtingas ir reikalauja per daug informacijos, gebėjimų bei laiko sąnaudų, kad jame galėtų veiksmingai dalyvauti didžiuma subjektų, o masių psichologijai būdingas polinkis sekti paskui vadą. Oligarchijos kritikai paprastai būna elitizmo kritikai apskritai; radikaliausi iš jų teigia, kad pati atstovaujamosios demokratijos idėja yra mechanizmas oligarchijos galiai įtvirtinti. Tokia nuomonė patvirtintų „geležinio oligarchijos dėsnio“ pagrįstumą, bet nepanaikintų oligarchijos ir demokratijos skirties. Abiem atvejais valdo mažuma, tik oligarchijoje toji mažuma tarnauja savo, ne rinkėjų interesams. Šiuolaikinės oligarchijos pavyzdys – apartheido sistema P.
